A new Community Choir for the Felixstowe area.

By Rachel Sloane

Singing pop and songs from musicals, a new mixed adult choir started singing in the Spa Pavilion lounge on Monday 15 October 2012. Over 30 singers (men and women aged over 18) are now attending on Monday evenings. Music included the Beatles, Fiddler on the Roof and Adele and you can follow the choir on Twitter: @felixcommchoir.

The new website for the choir is now live: http://felixstowecommunitychoir.org.uk

No-one has to buy sheet music or be able to read music. The idea is to sing for fun and the members will eventually decide if they want to do any public performances.

The choir was the idea of local broadcaster and Felixstowe resident, Rachel Sloane. Musician Emily Bennett, who went to school in the town and returned to live here earlier in the year, is the pianist and conductor.

“I think it’s great that we’ve started a choir in Felixstowe”, said Emily. “Singing is really therapeutic and group singing in particular, is a great way to boost one’s spirit. It really is the best medicine!”

Rachel is also excited about the new choir,

“Felixstowe has several very good musical theatre groups but I, like many people, just don’t have time to attend lots of rehearsals and a week of shows,” she explained. “As I love the idea of singing popular songs with a crowd of people, I thought it’d be an idea to see how many other people wanted to take part too. I am thrilled at the response.”

Everyone who is interested in Felixstowe Community Choir should come to the Spa Pavilion Lounge on Monday evenings.  Doors and bar open at 7pm, singing is from 7.30-9.30pm.  The cost is £4 per person, pay on the door.  A raffle is held to help defray costs.

Emily Bennett is a local singer, musician and actor. She trained at University College Suffolk, and Guildford School of Acting. As a recording artist Emily has worked with some of the top bands in Israel, as well as recording a CD of children's songs whilst based in the country. Back in the UK Emily has performed locally in concerts for 'Music in Felixstowe', and plays regularly with the Ipswich based band 'Jackknife Horsebox'. She also coaches a choir for adults in Stowmarket.

Rachel Sloane is a freelance writer, broadcaster and conference facilitator with her own Felixstowe based media production and training company. Although she has been in am-dram groups in the past, Rachel hasn’t sung in a choir since she was at school in Ipswich but loves singing along with the radio and CD’s of show tunes.
