The Suffolk High Sheriff Awards 2021-2

Suffolk’s charities and community groups are invited to apply for the High Sheriff’s Awards 2022. The High Sheriff of Suffolk, Edward Creasy is delighted to announce that nominations for the six categories of awards are now open.  

“I’m very excited that we can plan to hold the High Sheriff’s Awards Ceremony in person this year,

and I’m looking forward to what should be a fantastic celebratory event after two years of meeting remotely.,” said the Suffolk High Sheriff, Edward Creasy. “This year I have had the privilege to meet so many wonderful charities and the volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to helping their causes, and this is a great time to celebrate the amazing achievements that they have fulfilled. I would encourage as many charities as possible to apply for the awards; it is a chance to recognise all the amazing work that’s been done across the county in a really difficult environment.”

Shortlisted nominees will be invited to the glittering award ceremony at The East Of England Co-Operative’s Head Quarters at Wherstead Park, on  Wednesday 16th March, where the awards will be presented to the winners. Voluntary groups should submit their entries for the six categories listed below, by the closing date for nominations on Monday 17th January 2022 at 5pm.

The annual community awards are administered and hosted by Suffolk Community Foundation.

“Charities, Community Groups and local neighbourhood initiatives have given so much to support those in need during this very challenging time. The awards provide not only an opportunity to celebrate how amazing  and vital their contribution has been, but also to showcase their work for the future. They need the Support of everyone in Suffolk now more than ever as we face the challenge together in Suffolk to people’s lives back on track’’ said Tim Holder, Head of Public Affairs for Suffolk Community Foundation who, with Lesley Dolphin from BBC Radio Suffolk, will host the awards ceremony. 

The Suffolk High Sheriff’s Awards are designed to reward the volunteers, charities and community groups in Suffolk who devote their time and energy to improve the communities in which they live and work, to make Suffolk a better and safer place. They are sponsored by Birketts, Ashtons Legal, the East Anglian Daily Times and the East of England Co-op and The Suffolk High Sheriff’s Fund.

Nominations are now open for the following award categories:

  • Volunteer of the Year under 30: open to anyone under 30 who has gone the extra mile to make a difference. .(Sponsored by Birketts)
  • Volunteer of the Year over 30: open to anyone over 30 who has gone the extra mile to make a difference. 
  • Group of the Year: open to all recently established groups supporting their communities in some way. (Sponsored by Ashtons Legal)
  • Suffolk’s Caring Community Award: open to all groups and individuals who have

strengthened, connected and/or encouraged Suffolk’s many and diverse communities. (Sponsored by the East Anglian Daily Times)

  • Supporting the Isolated Award: open to all groups and individuals who have helped isolated people feel more connected and valued. (Sponsored by the East of England Co-op)
  • Suffolk High Sheriff Annual Award: open to those who have made a meaningful difference in helping those in Suffolk who have been particularly badly harmed by the experience of the pandemic in order to re-establish their lives. (Sponsored by the High Sheriff Fund)

The judging by will take place on Monday 21st February and those shortlisted will be notified shortly afterwards.

Suffolk’s Volunteer of the Year Award – under 30 (Individual)

This award encourages voluntary organisations, charities and community groups across Suffolk to nominate one of their volunteers for services above and beyond the ‘call of duty’.

This person will have demonstrated commitment, supporting others, showing why they stand out, and detailing the ways in which their involvement and actions have had a directly beneficial effect. This award may be for someone who has stepped up during the pandemic and given their time generously despite having to confront their own issues as a result of the changes enforced on them by Covid 19.

The award consists of a trophy for the winning volunteer and a cash award for his or her voluntary organisation, charity or community group. .(Sponsored by Birketts)

Suffolk’s Volunteer of the Year Award – over 30 (Individual)

This award encourages voluntary organisations, charities and community groups across Suffolk to nominate one of their volunteers for services above and beyond the ‘call of duty’.

This person will have demonstrated regular commitment for a period of time, supporting others, showing why they stand out, and detailing the ways in which their involvement and actions have had a directly beneficial effect.

The award consists of a trophy for the winning volunteer and a cash award for his or her voluntary organisation, charity or community group. 

The Suffolk High Sheriff’s Group of the Year Award (group award)

This award has been created to recognise and encourage groups, organisations or charities, or those that have never been previously nominated for a High Sheriff Award to apply.

The group should be able to show the impact, value and sustainability of the work on the

communities they serve and/or their individual beneficiaries. They must show how resourceful they have been, making the most of opportunities, adapting their

services and expanding their reach (especially during Covid) and how they have implemented plans showing the difference the organisation has made to improving the lives of others less fortunate.

The award consists of a trophy, certificate and a cash award. (Sponsored by Ashtons Legal)

Suffolk’s Caring Community Award (group award)

This award is designed to recognise an enterprising individual or a voluntary organisation showing ways in which they have brought a community together. It will demonstrate how the difficulties such as, loneliness, isolation, citizenship, community safety, crime prevention or health issues, have been addressed to have a positive effect on a community; creating an environment bringing people together, giving support where there has been none,

extending reach into rural communities and the resultant unforeseen benefits of such actions and interventions.

The award consists of a trophy and a cash award for the successful community group or charity. (Sponsored by the East Anglian Daily Times)

The Suffolk Supporting the isolated award.

This award is designed to recognise how a group has worked during Covid and continued to use some of the learnings to help them progress and diversify delivery methods in order to support those in our community who have found themselves isolated lonely and lacking in hope as a result of the pandemic. All delivery ensures that “no one is left behind”, that interventions have been inclusive and how they have supported people to overcome the anxieties and obstacles caused by the experience of the pandemic. The Suffolk High Sheriff Annual Award

This award is designed to recognise how opportunities have been made available to those who have found the experience of the last 15 months particularly distressing and are now in need of support in order to reshape their lives. Priority will be given to organisations who are striving to provide all types of educational and training opportunities to young people, including re-training, upskilling and promoting a positive learning experience to enable them to face the future with confidence; and to organisations who have worked hard to ensure that everyone in the community is given the chance to use their skills to the full in the post Covid 19 (Sponsored by the High Sheriff Fund)
